E-mail Print

Silverstone DS321External hard drive enclosures are a dime-a-dozen in this day and age, with more and more of them hitting the market. Many of them are single drive units that are good for a quick way to store or access your data externally, but this type of enclosure is not fitted for all of us. With the size of today’s hard drives (3TB at time of writing), losing even one could be a devastating ordeal. This is when our next product for evaluation comes in. The SilverStone DS321 enclosure can house two 3.5” SATA drives, provides you with the option to run them in RAID, topping it all off by connecting through the ultra-fast USB3 bus. This look like something you've been waiting for? Read along as we dig into it.

Archgon MH-2612The first enclosure we will be taking a look at will be the MH-2612 for 2.5" drives, which looks similar to many other HDD enclosures on the market. The thing here is we were able to take the unit and get it plugged into the system in no time at all. No tools were needed and the performance did turn out to be very good thanks to the USB3 support. MUKii TransImp Hard Drive Dock Plus

User Rating: / 1PoorBest

mukii dockMany companies make hard drive docks and we personally have reviewed at least a dozen. A few months back we reviewed one of MUKii's first dock models. It turned out to be a great unit that performed well and still looked good while doing it. MUKii has decided to give that model a refresher and now have came out with an improved version. Like the Plus model updated hard drive enclosure (which we also just reviewed), this new model has a small LCD readout that displays the real time transfer speeds to and from the drive when accessed.

MUKii TransImp X3 Hard Drive Enclosure Plus

Something else that MUKii is realizing is that people want more for their money. Functionality and quality is one thing, but good looks are also a must.. So, often is the case that we want both; we deserve it. Right? This brings us to our latest review product from MUKii, their TransImp X3 Hard Drive Enclosure Plus. One might remember the TransImp U3 model that we reviewed some months back and think this is just a redesigned shell; however, that is not the case at all. The TransImp X3 is indeed an external enclosure with USB3 support, but it also comes with a bunch of new features, enough to make it worth of the prefix 'Plus'. So grab a drink, perhaps a snack and sit back as we show you just what this enclosure has in store for you!

MUKii TransImp ComboToday we get to show you a great combo pack from MUKii which features the new and [hopefully] improved USB3 PCIe card, as well as a choice between their hard drive dock, 3.5" enclosure or 2.5" enclosure (all of which are SATA I/II compatible). You now are able to get everything you need to bring USB 3.0 capability and functionality to your system, be that your work computer where you need to quickly share data between it and your home PC, or your personal desktop should you just want an external storage solution that is limited to the slow data transfer rates of USB2.

User Rating: / 2PoorBest
Max 5GThermaltake, a maker of some pretty popular external enclosures, have recently released a new enclosure that takes the guess work out of choosing a good enclosure, one that will provide your hard drive with years of good cooling performance. The new Max5G is a handsome looking enclosure, and is mated with dual 80mm blue LED cooling fans that will keep your drive cool, but more importantly keeping it functional.

Thermaltake BlacX 5G Hard Drive Dock

thermaltake blacx 5gThe new BlacX 5G from Thermaltake looks pretty much like all their other hard drive docks but it does offer one more thing and that is USB3.0. With the performance that SuperSpeed delivers there is no better way to get data from one location to another, but at $50 is it really worth the extra premium you have to fork out to have it on your desktop? We will see.

MUKii TransImp MD Dual 2.5" Internal Dock

User Rating: / 3PoorBest
MUKii TransImp MDMUKii's internal enclosure differs slightly from that offered by Vantec, with the MUKii TransImp MD utilizing in the smaller 3.5” bay, as apposed to the larger 5.25” bay of the Vantec. For those that may be willing to sacrifice one of the few 3.5” exterior bays, then this would be a fair exchange since the TransImp MD is a really nice looking enclosure and won't clash with the exterior of your case. Of course, that is completely besides being rather handy to those in need of data retrieval from a 2.5” hard drive.
