Ultra 850It has been awhile since Ultra released a new power supply, but that changed today. The new X4 is Ultra's newest and best looking power supply. The X4 is aimed at the enthusiast looking to build a gamer rig around and the individual that needs a good reliable power supply for max overclocking and long bench sessions. If these groups of people are fond of it, then the rest of the world usually catches on. We received two units from Ultra, a 600 model and a 850 unit. Lets get the units on the test bench and see what they are all about.

Coolmax ZP 1000 Watt Power Supply

User Rating: / 3PoorBest

ZP1000Well, our next product up for review is from  our good friends at Coolmax, a company who  believes you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get a high quality PSU. This is why they sent us over the ZP-1000. The ZP-1000 is a 1,000 watt partial modular unit that is meant to go up against the likes of Thermaltake, Corsair and the other big name manufacturers who dominate the power supply market. Even if you are not in the market for such a high output power supply at a price of $150, it may be something to consider as it would help in the future-proofing of your rig.

Thermaltake EVO_Blue 750 Watt Power Supply

User Rating: / 4PoorBest

evo_blue 750Today I will be taking a look at another gift from Thermaltake that was sitting on my front door step when I arrived home today. The gift came in the form of a brand spanking new Evo_Blue power supply. The Evo_Blue comes in two different wattage's. The first is a 650 and the second is the 750; which, we will be examining today. My first impression of the Evo_Blue was it was made more for modders and other creative individuals out there than gamers and enthusiasts. You will see more of why I say this in a few.

overviewI have always being a big fan of FSP aka Sparkle for a long time. At one point I worked in an electronic store where I sold quite a few. FSP stability and prefection to quatity has always lead to some well built systems. And just last January, at the CES, we meet with one of their reps. As he showed us around pointing out some of their future offerings I knew I would have to get some of these units in the lab.

overviewAnd for those that are fortunate enough to be able to afford such a system, Tuniq has a new PSU that may be right up your alley. Tuniq is no stranger to constructing highend air-coolers but are also in the business of providing highend power supplies. A couple of weeks ago we bought the Miniplant from them but today we will be showcasing their lastest offering. A 1200 watt mammoth entitled: Ensemble. The number 1200 is not the really thing that makes the Ensemble special but also the fact that is boast an efficient rating of 87%. All these numbers are enough to make you wander, so since you are wandering lets take a closer look at the Ensemble.

overviewCorsair is one of those companies no matter what they venture into it will be a success. Not only are they one of the most successful memory manufacturers but last month we took a look at their Voyager 32GB flash drive and it too was a big hit. Corsair has of lately broaden their range of products to include power supplies. The HX received great awards from around the web. based on the same tech that made the HX a hit the TX series is sure to be a benchmark in the world of power supplies. The unit that we will be taking a look at today is the 750 watt model. According to Corsair the TX is designed to give you maximum amount of power with the maximum of protection but at a minimum amount of money spent.

Coolmax CUQ1350 1350 Watt Power Supply

E-mail Print
overviewCoolmax was kind enough to send over one of their more powerful power supplies. The CUQ1350 is the big dog from Coolmax and guaranteed to power the most extreme systems. The CUQ1350 is a somewhat different than the CUG950 we reviewed a few weeks ago. The CUQ series is not totally modular unlike the CUG, which is totally modular. And a stunning brushed aluminum enclosure encloses all the power the unit has to offer. This is just some of what the new CUG1350 has to offer. What else does the CUG has to offer? Lets read the review shall we.

overviewToday I'm reviewing the Silverstone. I respect Silverstone. Their products are attractive and perform well, but I'm not going to take it easy on the DA850. For this PSU to garner a good review from me, it will have to stay stable while providing power to all my hardware.

overviewHiper was kind enough to contact us to review the latest in their Type R series offering- The Mark 2 or MK 2. The metal connectors are a surprise omission, I loved them, but the mesh housing stays. New on the MK2  units is the increased efficiency rating and power support. The surprise addition is USB ports! Keep reading to find out what a power supply and USB have in common.

Cooler Master USNA95 Ultra Slim Power Adapter

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 06:13 Posted By Tony Walker
coolermaster usna95These are just two reasons that I wish power adapters would just disappear altogether, but the chances of that happening are slim. In the meantime we do have the USNA95 from Cooler Master. This little slim AC adapter has plenty of juice to power your mid-sized laptop, or even your cell if you need it. The real kicker is the fact the USNA95 is about the size of a deck of playing cards, and best of all it weighs about the same as one too.

The death and rebirth of Duke Nukem Forever: a history

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 00:49 Posted By Clinton

Duke Nukem Forever was announced in 1997, after its predecessor, Duke Nukem 3D, had rocked the PC market with a hero who liked kicking ass, hanging out with strippers, and murdering alien police officers that were, literally, pigs. It was inappropriate, raunchy, and amazing.

As AMD prepares Radeon HD 6000 graphics cards, is Nvidia ready to cut price on GTX 460?

Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:57 Posted By Clinton

Even if Nvidia’s recent roll out of graphics cards based on its new Fermi architecture has slightly dulled AMD’s momentum in the graphics market, the Radeon brand is still rolling along, with Nvidia supposedly mulling a price cut on one of its new boards. At the same time, AMD is readying its new Radeon HD 6000 series, which will be more of an evolutionary step forward from the 5000 series, but should continue to put pressure on Nvidia.

Tuesday, 07 September 2010 07:40 Posted By Tony Walker
cm haf 912So what do you do when you don’t need a large case? Coolermaster has the answer for you; it is the HAF 912. The 912 is a mid-size tower that stands a mere nineteen inches tall, but still has the look that we came to love from the preceding HAF models. The HAF 912 shares the same great rugged looks, spacious interior, and great air circulation like it's bigger brothers; however, it has one thing unique only to it, it's budget price point. If you're like us, you are left wondering how was Coolermaster able to build such a great case for a mere $60? Join us in the following pages and find out!

Charles Darwin's ecological experiment on Ascension isle

Thursday, 02 September 2010 10:24 Posted By Clinton

A lonely island in the middle of the South Atlantic conceals Charles Darwin's best-kept secret.

Two hundred years ago, Ascension Island was a barren volcanic edifice.

Today, its peaks are covered by lush tropical "cloud forest".

What happened in the interim is the amazing story of how the architect of evolution, Kew Gardens and the Royal Navy conspired to build a fully functioning, but totally artificial ecosystem.

Thomas Edison's plot to hijack the movie industry

Thursday, 02 September 2010 10:19 Posted By Clinton

It was a dark and stormy night on December 18, 1908. Okay—maybe it wasn't so dark and stormy. But it should have been, because that was the night Thomas Edison tried to hijack the motion picture industry.

"With his beetle brows, long wispy hair, and beatific look, Edison might have seemed the addled inventor," writes the historian Neil Gabler, "but he was a shrewd businessman and a fearsome adversary who was never loath to take credit for any invention, whether he was responsible or not."

Plan for nationwide free wireless broadband finally shot down

Thursday, 02 September 2010 10:18 Posted By Clinton
For four years the Federal Communications Commission tossed the idea  around like a beach ball: a coast-to-coast free wireless service across the low end of the 2GHz "AWS-3" band. The service would pay for itself via advertisements and by selling commercial access to various portions of the license area. The company that proposed the plan, M2Z Networks, would commit to building out the project in a decade, and pay five percent of its annual revenue to the United States Treasury.
