Introduction to the Sapphire HD 5830 Video Card
If you need one more Radeon HD 5XXX series card to hit the market, it would have to be placed between the HD 5850 and the HD 5770. The card would have to be a median between the $300 asking price of the HD 5850 and the $160 HD 5770. Better yet, it should offer a noticeable performance increase over the HD 5770. The addition of this card should will have the whole price spectrum sealed up for ATI.
Today, we will be reviewing just that card. The Radeon HD 5830 looks to bridge the gap between the two cards. It is based on the Cypress GPU core that makes up the HD 5850/5870. Even the transistor and memory core are the same as the bigger brethren, which is 2.15 billion and 1000MHz, respectfully. That is all that this models share with one another.
When it comes to GPU clock, the HD 5830 sports a very respectable 800MHz, which is- believe it or not- faster than that of the HD 5850. This small fact may stand out, but we found one that stood out more. After some research we found that there are no reference models of this card. So, all the ones on the market are non-reference. And of the models on the shelves of the local brick and mortar computer stores, the HD 5830 measured longer than the HD 5850. This is to overcome the larger wattage output of the HD 5830 than the HD 5850. The little brother output is 175 watts versus 151.
The first sample of the HD 5830 we will be reviewing here at Pro-Clockers comes from our friends at Sapphire. At $240, this card is definitely better-priced than the HD 5850, but many of us were looking for a card closer to $200, but offering the same performance. With this being the case, the HD 5830 still offers all the visual benefits of the other 5XXX series, which includes Eyefinity, DirectX 11 and high quality audio though HDMI. Is it worth the $80 higher asking price over the HD 5850? We will find out.
